Mark Zuckerberg's Sister Quits Facebook to Start her own Social Media Venture

Randi Zuckerberg, sister of Facebook.com founder Mark Zuckerberg resigned from the position in Facebook after a long stint as a director of marketing at Facebook. This may be a bad sign for the social media giant after the launch of a rising competitor Google plus. Randi Zuckerberg is two years older than Mark Zuckerberg. Randi is the founder of her new organization RtoZ media which will be working with other media houses to help them build programming helpful for making social media supportive platforms.
Randi was a very famous name in Facebook word and has handled some very big projects such as Facebook Presidential Primary Debate, ABC & Facebook Live Election Night Coverage in 2010 and Davos/Facebook partnership. According to some of the social media experts, this resignation may allow Randi to work indirectly with some of the other social media giants such as twitter and may be Google Plus.
Randi was on maternity leave before sending her resignation. In her massage for the Facebook team, Randi said she is thankful to the strong mentor-ship and guidance she received at Facebook. She said I want to show that you don’t have to be an engineer to become a successful hacker.
Randi has received many awards for her excellent work at Facebook. She was recently nominated for Emmy award. Before joining Facebook, Randi worked for some of the big organizations such as Forbes, hosted some famous TV shows such as Good Morning America.
Now it will be interesting to see what will be the next move for Randi Zuckerberg because Facebook is facing the competition from twitter and Google plus and if she works with these competitors, Business will become seriously difficult for Facebook.

EA: 4-5 year game console cycle "gone forever"

game, ea, console, xbox 360,

Electronic Arts conducted their Q1 2012 earnings call yesterday, although it wasn’t the financial figures that garnered the most attention during the briefing. EA CEO John Riccitiello gave a brief overview of the industry as a whole and proclaimed that the gaming and console marketplaces have been changed forever.
Riccitiello pointed out that digital content has revolutionized the gaming industry. The top paid applications in the Andorid Marketplace and Apple’s App Store are all games. The fastest-growing revenue streams aren’t just the games themselves anymore but the digital content associated with them.
These are all statements that we would agree with, but it's his comments about console gaming and emerging markets that is a bit puzzling.
"Gone forever is the 4- to 5-year console cadence that gave developers ample time to invest and retool for the next big wave," Riccitiello said. "Consider that just 18 months ago, there was no iPad, Google was just experimenting with Android and most big games were limited to a single revenue opportunity at launch. Consider that each of the major consoles now has a controller that encourages users to get off the couch and get into the action."
Depending upon your interpretation, some would argue that Riccitiello might have missed the mark with the above statement. Devices like smartphones and the iPad are creating new markets, not replacing existing consoles.
And if anything, it would seem that digital content would extend the life of a console and help titles hold their relevance longer. A good example of this is the Call of Duty series which releases a multiplayer map pack every few months at roughly $15 a pop. The same can be said for motion devices like the Xbox Kinect, an add-on to the 360 which will extend the life of the console, not shorten it. Without new digital content or innovative accessories, gamers might have demanded something new long ago.

Asus' $199 Eee PC

meego, linux, asus, netbook, eee,

Netbooks have been harshly relegated in recent times, while tablets have taken the spotlight. To be fair though, today's nicest ultraportables have all taken cues from what made netbooks successful in the first place, including their lower prices. You may recall that luxury thin and light systems used to set you back no less than $2,000 a few years ago, and now you can grab similarly well-built models for about a grand.
Asus, who is responsible for popularizing the netbook with the Eee PC series, is planning to offer a new entry-level model, the Eee PC X101 that starts at just $199 running Intel's MeeGo operating system. An identical model running Windows 7 Starter is expected to be availabe for $299.
Inside the system will be an Intel Atom N435/N455 processor, 1GB DDR3 upgradable to 2GB, 8GB solid-state drive, WLAN and Bluetooth connectivity, two USB 2.0 ports, audio out and a 3-cell battery meant to be good for up to 4 hours. This will be wrapped up in a 10.1" casing (1024x600 display), weighing just 2 pounds and boasting a thickness of 17.6 mm.
If you can forgive the small footprint, which is meant to be a feature in itself, for the price I don't think you could ask for more.
The Eee PC X101 was unveiled at this year's Computex along with its attractive price tag, but no release date was announced. U.S. retailers started to list the system for pre-order last week and Asus put up the product page, hinting that the system may become available any day now.

Acer Iconia Tab A500 Review

Google’s Android Honeycomb OS was the talk of the town as the calendar rolled over to 2011. Billed as Android’s first true tablet OS, most got their first look at Honeycomb during CES where it was loaded on the Motorola Xoom. Since then we have seen numerous Honeycomb-based tablets find their way to market, including the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 and the T-Mobile LG G-Slate, both products we’ve since reviewed.
Today we’ll be looking at another tablet built around Android, this time coming from a traditional PC maker, meet the Acer Iconia Tab A500.
Acer has been one of the leading netbook manufacturers in the past few years, a position that gave them the chance to grow sales in North America and in Europe. With tablets eating up on netbook sales at an accelerated pace, we can clearly see where Acer is headed with the Iconia offerings. We intend to figure out what’s Acer proposition with the Iconia Tab A500, not only from a value perspective -- a driving force of netbook sales -- but in terms of features, design and overall experience.

Powering the WiFi-only Iconia Tab is typical current-gen tablet hardware which includes an Nvidia Tegra 2 dual core 1 GHz processor, 16GB of internal storage, 1GB of DDR2 system memory, front and rear facing cameras, 802.11 b/g/n WLAN and a 10.1” WXGA HD Multi-Touch Display operating at 1280 x 800.
Our unit shipped running Android version 3.0.1 with a retail price of $449. Since then the tablet has received an upgrade to Android Honeycomb version 3.1 and a price cut to $395. A 32GB model is available for a $50 premium. This pricing sets the Iconia Tab to be $100 and $150 cheaper than Apple’s iPad 2 for the same storage capacities.
If one were to compare Acer’s Iconia Tab A500 to other options on the market, it would most closely resemble Motorola’s Xoom both in fit and finish, which isn’t a bad thing though months have passed since the introduction of the Xoom, meaning there’s a lot more competition among tablets than before.

On the front of the tablet is the 10.1” display with a black bezel that stretches from left to right edge and terminates at a 90-degree angle. The top and bottom of the bezel are a rounded extension of the brushed aluminum surface found on the back of the unit. The front facing webcam is a 2 megapixel unit that is positioned on the left bezel.
The display caught our attention as you can actually see the gridlines under the screen that the touch sensors use. In similar fashion, you can see the same grid on the Motorola Xoom although it isn’t as prominent. The Apple iPad 2 uses a different display panel where there are no visible touch sensitive grids. We will return to this topic while evaluating the tablet’s outdoor performance.

On the left side of the tablet we find a power/sleep button, a 3.5mm headphone jack and a mini-HDMI jack. On the right side of the Iconia Tab is a pinhole reset button, a full size USB port, mini USB port and the power connector.
Across the top edge of the tablet is a volume rocker, orientation lock switch and a micro SD card slot under a hidden compartment. Then at the bottom is a proprietary docking connector that works in conjunction with the optional docking station.

The docking station allows for two different viewing angles, works as a charging station and features an external speaker connection. Also included is a wireless remote control that allows you to adjust media playback.
The backside of the A500 is similar to the iPad 2, featuring a beautiful brushed aluminum finish. A 5 megapixel camera resides at the top right side of the panel with a small LED flash above it. Two stereo speakers flank the bottom corners with the Acer logo centered in the middle. I really like what Acer has done with the back panel; I think it looks better than both the iPad 2 and the Xoom.

Apple may face damages of $25.5 million in Korean suit

apple, iphone, ios, lawsuit, privacy, korea,

Earlier today we reported that Apple and Samsung were tangled in a legal battle in Australia where Cupertino had prevented the Korean company from releasing their Galaxy Tab 10.1 in that country. In an unrelated story, the tides have turned on Apple as they are facing damages of $25.5 million in a Korean class action lawsuit.
The suit, handed by the Miraelaw law firm, contests that Apple’s iPhone violated domestic laws on privacy. The complaint stems from accusations earlier this year that Apple had been tracking user’s locations in iOS 4 without consent.
Apple released a statement a few days later explaining that they were not tracking the location of devices but rather “maintaining a database of Wi-Fi hotspots and cell towers around your current location” to help devices calculate their location when requested.
As of July 31, nearly 28,000 iPhone customers had signed up as plaintiffs in the class action suit. According to the Korean Herald, when the lawsuit was first announced, Korean iPhone users overloaded and crashed the server hosting the sign-up website.
If successful, the lawsuit would require Apple to shell out 27 billion won ($25.5 million), resulting in 1 million won ($949 based on today’s conversion rates) per plaintiff named in the suit. There are over 3 million iPhone users in the country according to the Korean Herald story. Currently, nearly 1 percent of Korean Apple mobile phone owners are participating in the lawsuit.
Miraelaw is planning to file the lawsuit against Apple Korea by the middle of August.

Android conquers almost 50 percent of smartphone

android, ios, smartphone, cell phone, handset,

A new study by researcher Canalys indicates that Google’s Android platform has reached nearly 50 percent of the global smartphone market.
Canalys’ Q2 2011 smartphone market estimates show that globally, the industry grew by 73 percent year-on-year with over 100 million devices shipped in Q2 2011. This seems to align with a study from IMS Research that claims smartphones will account for 28 percent of handsets sold this year.
Android ranked number one in 35 of the 56 countries that Canalys polled in the market estimate. Shipments of devices running Google’s operating system were up 379 percent from this time last year.
Apple’s iOS platform took the number two spot with a share of 19 percent globally, trumping Nokia’s Symbian which previously held the second position.
In what Google has called their best deal ever, the company acquired the 22-month-old mobile phone software startup Android in August 2005 for an undisclosed sum (estimated to be around $50 million). Development on the mobile OS was put into overdrive and in September 2008, T-mobile unveiled the first “Google phone”, the HTC-developed G1.
Since that time, Android has steadily climbed the proverbial mobile OS ladder, overtaking Apple’s popular iPhone in the US this past January and surpassing RIM’s BlackBerry devices in April.
Key to Google’s overwhelming success is the fact that Android is open-source software and has been licensed for use on multiple manufacturers’ devices.
