A committee monitors research activity in Bangalore University. Over 85% of the faculty members Bangalore University have doctoral degrees and are engaged in directing research scholars.
To promote research activity, the university offers research fellowships to 1 or 2 students a department every academic year. There is one hostel exclusively for research students.
A greater part of the research scholars are drawn from the jurisdiction area of Bangalore University. The number of Ph.D. awarded during last 5 years is about six hundred. More than 1044 students are registered at present for Ph.D. Several teachers of colleges work under the Faculty Improvement Program (FIP). 10% students are NET scholars.

The University monitors research activity of the faculty members by yearly performance appraisal reports. The research activity of the Departments of the University is well recognized in the form of special grants from the UGC of India.
The Department of History is doing research work in the disciplines of art history, modern history of Karnataka, Women Studies.
