Every year there seems to be one or more predictions of the world coming to an end. The predictors vary from religious or cult leaders to movie industry productions. I reviewed the past 10 years of box office revenues received worldwide for Apocalypse Now movies, and here is what I have found.
2001 - "Planet of the Apes" (Fox)Ranked #9 with $362,211,740 worldwide gross
This rendition of Planet of the Apes was a remake of the 1968 film of the same title based on the 1963 novel "La plante des singes" by Pierre Boulle. The original movie and the 2001 remake tells the story of Leo Davidson, an astronaut, crashing on a plant inhabited by apes who rule the world and treat humans as slaves. The heroine ape named Ari conspires with Leo and starts a rebellion to save the humans. In the 2001 film, directed by Tim Buton, Mark Wahlberg stars as Leo Davidson.
2002 - "Men in Black II" (Columbia Pictures)Ranked #5 with $441,818,803 worldwide gross
This sci-fi action comedy starring Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones is a sequel to the original Men in Black from 1997 and is based on The Men in Black - Malibu comic book series by Lowell Cunningham. The film Men in Black II takes place five years after the events in the original movie and finds Agent J (Will Smith) working with his partner Agent K (Tommy Lee Jones) who has returned from civilian life. In a routine crime investigation Agent J discovers a diabolical plot to destroy the Earth. He convinces Agent K to rejoin him and reunite with the MIB to save the world.
2003 - "Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines" (Warner Bros.)Ranked #7 with $433,371,112 worldwide gross
Terminator 3 or T3, as it was commonly called, is a sci-fi action film starring Arnold Schwarzenegger and directed by Jonathan Mostow. It was the second sequel to the original 1984 movie The Terminator. Arnold Schwarzenegger plays the role of a reprogrammed T-850 model 101 Terminator that the Resistance has sent back in time to protect John Connor (Nick Stahl) and Kate Brewster (Claire Danes) from T-X (Kristanna Loken) and stop Judgment Day, an impending nuclear holocaust initiated by Skynet.
2004 - "The Day After Tomorrow" (Fox)Ranked #6 with $544,272,402 worldwide gross
The effects of global warming depicted in this science fiction disaster movie plots catastrophic weather events that brings on a new ice age. Violent weather causes mass destruction around the world, and the movie ends with most of the Northern Hemisphere covered in ice leaving the earth population drastically reduced. Professor Jack Hall (Dennis Quaid), government climatologist and father of Sam Hall (Jake Gyllenhaal), play the leading roles in this disaster movie.
2005 - "War of the Worlds" (Paramount/DreamWorks)Ranked #4 with $591,745,540 worldwide gross
This Steven Spielberg sci-fi movie is based on the 1898 science fiction novel "The War of the Worlds" by H. G. Wells which tells the story of Martians invading the earth and defeating the earth's armies. In the 2005 film, Tom Cruise stars as Ray Ferrier, a Newark, New Jersey, dock worker separated from his wife and children who live in Boston. After the Martian invasion, Ray Ferrier (Tom Cruise) reunites with his family and attempts to save them and himself from Martian attack.
2006 - "X-Men: The Last Stand" (Fox/Marvel)Ranked #7 with $459,359,555 worldwide gross
This superhero film is the third in the X-Men series and is inspired by two X-Men comic book stories: "The Dark Phoenix Saga" and "Gifted". The X-Men are an Xavier Institute's special ops team who are protectors of both humans and mutants. Serious repercussions are caused by a "mutant cure". And, the X-Men's mission is to stop the war between the humans and mutants. The film is directed by Bret Ratner and stars Hugh Jackson as Logan and Halle Barry as Ororo Munroe.
2007 - "I Am Legend" (Warner Bros.)Ranked #7 with $585,349,010 worldwide gross
This science fiction film is an adaptation of the 1954 novel by Richard Matheson of the same title. Will Smith stars in this movie as Robert Neville, a virologist immune to a virus that resulted from a man-made cure for cancer which turned humans into mutants. He is apparently the sole human-survivor who struggles to find a cure while protecting himself from vampire-like mutants who stalk the streets at night.
2008 - "The Happening" (20th Century Fox)Gross revenue $163,403,799
This sci-fi thriller did not make it to the Top 10 for gross revenues. Co-produced and directed by M. Night Shyamalan, it stars Mark Wahlberg as Elliot Moore, a science teacher who attempts to escape with his friends from a mysterious air-borne neurotoxin that has affected the U.S. East Coast. The substance quickly spreads and causes people exposed to it to commit mass suicide and has everyone in hysteria.
2009 - "2012" (Columbia)Ranked #5 with $769,679,128 worldwide gross
This science fiction disaster film depicts cataclysmic events prophetically foretold for the year 2012. Directed by Roland Emmerich and starring John Cusack, the movie plot revolves around government efforts to save 400,000 people from the earth's predicted destruction following polar shifts that cause violent worldwide earthquakes and tsunamis.
2010 - "The Book of Eli" (Warner Bros.)Gross revenue $157,091,718
This post-apocalyptic action film directed by The Hughes brothers, starring Denzel Washington, did not reach the Top 10 ranking for gross revenues. The plot takes place 30 years after a nuclear apocalypse and revolves around a nomad named Eli (Denzel Washington) who is given the mission by a mysterious voice to deliver a sacred book to a location on America's West Coast.
