There are certain eye diseases and conditions that are ingrained in our genetics and can't be prevented but, if we're lucky, we can prevent or slow down the progression of deterioration in our eyes. The same principles involved in eating for better body health can be applied to vision health as well. Sometimes what you eat, and what you don't eat, can affect your vision for the better! First things first, drink water. This will help keep you hydrated and will also keep your eyes moisturized. Make no mistake, dehydration can harm your eyes. Now add in some vegetables and lean proteins. Foods like sweet potatoes, salmon, and carrots contain vitamins and minerals that our eyes need to stay healthy. If you're not able to keep up with a veggie-rich diet, invest in some good supplements. They won't replace a healthy diet but they will help insert some vitamins that you could be missing.In addition to a good diet, good posture can also help your vis ion. Just as sitting in front of your computer can cause issues with your body, it can also cause problems with your eyes. Since most of us are glued to our computers and cell phones until the wee hours of night, it's important to take breaks that don't involve electronics. Too much exposure to tiny, pixilated screens can increase the chances of having dry eyes and eye strain - so take a break when your eyes start feeling tired. Additionally, having your monitor positioned properly, at eye level, with a protective anti-glare film over it will also help reduce neck and eye strain. We also love having natural light - it's better than florescent but make sure your screen isn't facing your window or sliding glass door. The backdrop of bright light can cause watery eyes and eye fatigue.Another good way to protect your eyes from damage is a no-brainer: sun protection. Wearing sunglasses or eyeglasses frames with an ultraviolet protective coating over the lens is crucial! Wearing t inted eye glasses won't really help unless there is a UV coating over the lenses. Keeping your eyes healthy and protected doesn't have to be a hard task, just keep a healthy diet, wear protective eye wear, and sit properly at the computer and you're good to go!
