Every other week we receive an inquiry along the lines for example "can you design a cool looking iPhone case for us?"
"Sure", we say. We are happy to design a merchandise for you. Yet whether it is commercially successful for you - well, we do not know....
Do not get us wrong. The market for iOS devices is massive and growing. But the market for fashion accessories is becoming ever more crowded. To design a successful product you need to do some thinking initial:
1) Who's your customer? Don't say "iPhone users". iPhone customers might be anyone from a 13 year old high school kid to the CEO of a multinational corporation or even your 75 year old grandmother. Such end users have different requires, attitudes and purchasing power. Focusing on one group will help you to select a design that perfectly matches your customer's profile.
two) How much do you want to invest?You must be aware of your financial firepower. Manufacturing a plastic protective case, for example, requires an upfront initial investment for tooling. Cases made of sewn materials, similar to leather, do not need a large investment at the beginning of the manufacturing process. Yet your profit margin will tend to be smaller with all these sort of cases.
3) What's special about your product?Standard accessories like cases, headphones and sleeves are very competitive. Such products are fairly easy to make and big players have already emerged. In case you'd like to introduce an accessory in that field be sure you've a special idea. There are cases with built-in batteries, waterproof cases, cases with solar cells. We are sure there are numerous ideas out there waiting to be developed. Be inventive - invent something new. We at Detekt Design can do the rest for you.
4) Make certain the packaging is nice!We've blogged about packaging before. Packaging is specifically crucial for iOS accessories just like ipad and iphone. After all, you are not only selling a piece of plastic or leather. No, you're selling an item that protects your customers favourite gadget - an iPhone and/or an iPad. And all of these gadgets come with a certain consumer perception - good design and high-quality. Make sure your packaging also reflects all these perceptions.
