When the blood moves back from the organs to the heart, it is carried by a network of vessels called veins. Veins are thin-walled vessels compared to the arteries (vessels that take blood from the heart to the various organs). Veins contain one-way valves every few inches to prevent the blood flowing back due to gravity. It is when these valves become weak that the blood starts pooling in the veins. Veins then become dilated (widened) and twisted, and are called varicose. Any vein may become varicose, but the veins most commonly affected are those in the legs and feet.Another condition similar to varicose veins is spider veins. They are usually smaller, bluish and are closer to the skin's surface. They occur mostly on legs and at times can be found on the face too. They often look like a spider's web or a tree branch. For many people, varicose veins and spider veins are diseases of cosmetic concern only. But for others it can be more than just a cosmetic problem; symptoms co mmonly found in those suffering from varicose veins are pain, heaviness, burning, throbbing, muscle cramping and swelling in lower legs. Veins appear as enlarged, snake-like, blue veins and are most easily seen under the skin while standing. Itching may be present around the enlarged veins. Skin ulcers at ankle, whenever present, indicate a sever form of varicose veins.Due to blood pooling in the veins, varicose veins is characterized by a dull sensation of pain, cramps, feeling of heaviness in the legs or fatigue after standing for a short period. It is a general belief that the condition does not constitute much of a medical problem, except for the ugly, depressing sight it creates. Unfortunately, this is only true as long as the condition is treated on time. If left untreated for a very long period, varicose veins could lead to leg ulcers, formation of blood clot in deep veins, discoloration of the skin due to breakdown of blood cells or other more serious medical conditi ons.Diagnosing varicose veins could be as simple as visual observation, however, for a more accurate diagnosis, advanced medical procedures are employed. A common diagnostic tool for varicose vein is a medical procedure called phlebography. It involves injecting a radio-opaque substance into the bloodstream. The substance is monitored across the vein so that the abnormalities in blood flow can be noticed. X-ray or ultrasound can also be used to diagnose effectively the abnormality in venous blood flow causing varicose veins.Depending on the severity of the condition, there are three major treatment options for varicose veins. In most cases, wearing elastic compression stockings could be the only treatment needed. The stockings compress the veins of the leg improving blood flow through the veins. This treatment is usually very effective when coupled with weight loss, in case of obesity, increased activity and avoiding prolonged periods of standing or sitting. However, when thi s option is not effective, another medical procedure called sclerotherapy is often employed. This procedure involves cutting off blood flow through the affected vein by injecting a substances known as sclerosant. Often, the injection of this substance is done several times until a complete collapse of the faulty vein is achieved. Afterwards, pressure is externally applied to the vein until its ability to transport blood is restored. The procedure has been found to be very effective, with almost 90% improvement rate. However, the side effects include pain in the site of injection, bruises, skin sores and discoloration or appearance of brown lines along the site of the vein.In very severe cases of varicose veins, surgery may be employed. This procedure involves surgically removing the damaged part of the vein. However, this is a complex procedure and is therefore employed as a last resort in very severe cases.Though each case of varicose veins represents itself as an individua l one and needs to be treated accordingly, natural plant medicines VenousBalm-Rx and VenousDrops stand at the top of the table for treating varicose veins. VenousBalm-Rx and VenousDrops are established to not only reverse conditions stemming from venous insufficiency, but also improve the overall tone of the veins. These are true venous blood decongestants and used to negate venous blood stagnation which causes varicose veins and venous insufficiency. The astringent properties of these treatments provide a tightening effect to skin tissue. At Nature'sPharma, our products are based on advancements made in medicinal plants as they apply to virology, immunology, and dermatology. We have developed highly effective medicinal plant treatments, focusing on the medical, pharmaceutical, and clinical aspects of organic medicinal plants.
