When ebook users encounter errors or other trouble when trying to open their ebooks, the problem usually falls under one of five categories. If you're having trouble opening your ebook, you can use the follow list as a guide towards solving the problem.
Problem #1: You Have The Wrong eReader
eReaders can only use specific ebook formats and file types. One of the first things you should do when you buy an eReader is to check the manual to learn which ebook formats the eReader supports. You can then look for those formats when you're shopping for ebooks.
Solution: Purchase the correct ebook format for your eReader.
Problem #2: Youre Using The Wrong Software
eBooks are software files just like any other file that you have on your computer, and they must be opened with specific software. For example, Microsoft Reader .lit ebooks must be opened with Microsoft Reader, in the same way that a .doc file must be opened with Microsoft Word.
Solution: Before you buy or download an ebook, check the website where it is being offered to find out which program you will need for it. Download that program and install it on your computer. Don't attempt to open the ebook with other software.
Problem #3: You Didnt Follow The Proper DRM Procedure
Most book publishers will only sell their ebooks if they are protected by DRM (digital rights management). DRM is security software the prevents the user from illegally re-distributing the ebook. eBooks that are protected with DRM have to be opened with specific software, and that software has to be "activated" or "authorized" with your user ID. The ebook retail website where you purchased the ebook will have given you instructions on exactly what to do.
Solution: Follow all instructions that you're given for downloading and authorizing the ebook reader software that is required.Problem #4: The DRM Has Gone Wrong Over Time
This particular problem arises when youve purchased an ebook in the past. You might run into trouble if you try to use the ebook on a new computer/device, a computer that has had its operating system upgraded/reinstalled, or if youre simply trying to re-download an ebook that youd previously lost or deleted. When you want to use an ebook on a new device, you must download the ebook to that device using the same authorization that you used when you originally downloaded the ebook. You can't email the file to yourself or transfer it via an external drive or disk.
Solution: Begin the ebook download process from the beginning. Install any necessary software on the new computer/device, then authorize it using the same user ID that you used when you originally purchased the ebook. Finally, download the ebook directly to the new computer.
Problem #5: The eBook File is Corrupted or The Download Link is Bad
This is the least common reason why your ebook isn't opening. Most of the time, the problem has occurred because of one of the reasons outlined above. However, every once in a while the actual ebook file is damaged, or the download link isn't working properly. Only consider this if you have already determined that the above four problems are not what's causing the issue.
Solution: Contact the ebook seller and request that they check on the ebook and the download link.
The problems and solutions discussed above are not specific to each individual issue that might arise, but they are common general reasons why ebooks don't open. You should be able to use the information given as a starting point towards finding a solution.
